Theologians

Ok, so much to talk about and I can tell you right now, this is going to be snippets of my thought. But it's all about theology.

Two important responses (at least to my face) about my message this week.

1. "thanks, so much I'm going through life changes and have wanted direction on God's will...this has helped me....
2. (from an actual email)
"Hi Dan,
We met after your sermon on God's will on 07/03/04. We then
discussed that one aspect of His will is to hear Him (John 10:3,27)
that is to listen to His voice. If you would like we can setup a time
to meet sometime after July 9th.
If you and others would like to learn how to communicate with the
Lord I would love to meet with you and whoever else is interested. It
would take a few days to teach people. The best option would be to
meet once a week on friday or thursday for an hour, preferably friday.
Most of what will be discussed will be; pertinent Scripture in
learing to discern His voice, so you can actually listen to what Daddy
God has to say about you, His loving and encouraging thoughts;
revelation/interpretation of Scripture; and the application of
Scripture to enable you to do what the Bible tells you to do.
A short analogy (that I gave you on saturday) follows. How would
you grow up and function in society if your parents could not
communicate to you? Take away snail mail, email, sign language, lip
reading, and spoken language. It would be very difficult to function
in society. Since we live in the spiritual realm, how can we do the
Lord's will if you don't communicate with Him? He hears us but it would
be nice to hear His voice on a daily basis. He already speaks to us
all the time but it would be nice if we would listen to and recognize
that it is Him speaking."

not quite on the same page here... when I talked to him after church he was talking about how God's gives him poems songs, words, etc... Basically "channeling" God.

i don't think that we can say to any person who claims to have heard the voice of God that they haven't. God is big and above any of the things we think, and he could very well speak to anyone in the way that person is describing. i do think that we cannot learn to hear God's voice in the same way that person is saying. it's impossible to know whether or not what you are hearing is actually God. it says in 2 corinthians 11:14 that "Even Satan can disguise himself as an angel of light." plus, why should someone seek God's voice instead of God himself?

that's my take at least.

ok, I would actually argue that God doesn't speak New Revelation to people today. I think we really have the role of the Holy Spirit mixed up. His main role is to lead us to understanding of truth in scriptures. I'm not exactly understanding your point Eric. It seems that you contradict yourself in the same paragraph by saying that God does/can speak in that way and then saying that you don't think that he does. Can you clear that up for me?

seems as though the comment thingy isn't workin that great. oh well.

I did contradict myself, on accident of course. I was saying that we can never truly know what happens to other people. if someone were to tell me that god spoke to them, I just couldn't say they were wrong. I would definitely try to find out if they were confused, or if satan was trying to deceive them. I’ll explain this better some time in person....

I semi-agree with you on the role of the holy spirit. it says that the holy spirit will lead us to all truth. now, I don't know what that means. I don't know what that includes and excludes, and frankly it doesn't matter too much to me.

now, as far as the role of the holy spirit goes, I don't necessarily think that it would be the holy spirit communicating to a person. God is so great, so amazing, so incomprehensible that he could speak in an audible voice to an audience from anywhere. really there is no limit to his power, so I cannot rule out anything. I also have no clue as to what satan can do, so it is just as possible for him to do the same thing. I just don’t want to say that god can't do something.

in conclusion, I am not going to go out looking for god to speak to me, or really wait for him to speak to me. I will look for wisdom for everything that I think is worthy of seeking wisdom. If for whatever reason I think that god is speaking to me, I will not act on it unless I am sure that it was god and not something else. I won’t be doing anything without the guidance of those that I trust, which includes you. Again, in person discussion is cooler....
